Alison Bremner | Vintage and secondhand wallpaper collage on watercolor paper | 10" x 8" | 2024
A zebra leaps through botanical and vintage floral wallpaper. The feeling of running down a trail, on the chase to or from something.
The wallpaper in this work was sourced entirely secondhand — eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and old catalogs collected from home improvement stores — avoiding the creation of demand for new production. Wallpaper is a domestic luxury, a finishing touch for people who own homes. For younger generations priced out of the housing market, and for Native American women who face some of the starkest wealth and housing inequality in the country, wallpaper was never made with us in mind. Bremner enjoys the tension and joy from using a medium not made for her for purposes other than it was intended.
