The copper shield, or tináa, was an object of wealth and prestige among Northwest Coast First Nations people. Brought out during potlatch, it represented more than the value of the copper itself. The tináa once held a money-like value that today is held by the dollar bill. The Potlatch Dollar collection was born from that parallel: images of currency superimposed onto copper shields.
